Ethos Cannabis Commences Research with Thomas Jefferson University
This is the first research conducted by a university with the assistance of a Clinical Registrant in Pennsylvania
May 18, 2020 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. – Ethos Cannabis (“Ethos”), a multi-state cannabis company based in Philadelphia has officially launched its research relationship with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University (“Jefferson”) in Pennsylvania.
Ethos is the first operational company, and the holder of one of only eight Clinical Registrant (CR) licenses issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Health to work in cooperation with one of Pennsylvania’s major medical schools to conduct research related to medical cannabis. Jefferson, located throughout South Eastern Pennsylvania, is one of eight such medical schools which have been certified by the Pennsylvania DOH as an Academic Clinical Research Center (ACRC) to participate in the program.
This first study to be conducted by Jefferson with the cooperation of Ethos is an observational, longitudinal study to examine the impact of medical cannabis on the quality of life in patients with medical conditions defined as serious medical conditions under the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Medical Marijuana Program; to collect and catalog which doses and forms of MMJ relieve symptoms in specific medical conditions, as well as capturing tolerability and side effect information;
The goal of the second study is to learn, via focus groups, about experiences patients had obtaining certifications from the state to allow for the use of medical cannabis, and issues the patients confronted in dispensaries.
Ethos is fully funding these first two studies and the dispensary staff will collaborate with Jefferson’s research team to pre-screen potential patients for enrollment in the clinical trials, participate in research conversations, give feedback about what patients in the dispensary are reporting and relay frequently asked questions. Additionally, they will provide Jefferson with product specific information about all cannabis products that each patient enrolled in the study has purchased.
Brooke Worster, the Principal Investigator for the first two studies, and a physician at Jefferson says “This is the first time there’s ever been a partnership between an American cannabis producer and academic researchers. We are really excited to partner with Ethos and bring research-backed information to patients in Pennsylvania.”
“The involvement of medical schools in Pennsylvania conducting cannabis research is a game changer. For years I have tried to forge partnerships with hospital systems, medical schools and pharmaceutical companies to conduct research. Individual physicians or researchers were interested, but I could never find a company, university or hospital that was open to it. That has all changed with the unique Clinical Research license program in Pennsylvania. The combination of regulatory structure, top-tier medical research, and investment infrastructure have put Philadelphia in the position to be the “Silicon Valley” of the cannabis industry, and we are very excited to be a part of it today,” said Teddy Scott, Chief Executive Officer of Ethos and the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of PharmaCann.
David Clapper, Ethos President of Pennsylvania and Chief Financial Officer, added, “This is a huge step for Ethos Cannabis and something we have been working towards for several years. The Jefferson team and the patient community has been really supportive and encouraging. We already have several hundred patients that have pre-enrolled at our Philadelphia dispensary to get this program started.”
