CBD and THC: The Main Differences

THC and CBD are the most common terms in the cannabis community. While many people understand the basics of THC and CBD, there’s still some unfamiliarity with the main differences and similarities of these cannabis compounds.

What are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds in plants like Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are the most prominent cannabinoids with similar chemical structures and unique mechanisms of action. There are over 100 types of cannabinoids, all delivering unique effects.

Other well-known cannabinoids besides cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol include:

  • CBG (cannabigerol)
  • CBN (cannabinol)
  • CBC (cannabichromene)
  • THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin)

How do cannabinoids work?

One of the main differences between CBD and THC is how they each affect the body. After consuming cannabinoids such as CBD or THC, their main mechanism of action is interacting with the endocannabinoid system. The ECS is responsible for regulating various functions, including appetite, sleep, pain, and mood regulation.

There are two types of receptors within the endocannabinoid system, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are primarily located within the central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are more commonly found in immune cells and the peripheral nervous system, however, both receptor types can be present in various tissues throughout the body.

CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, meaning it doesn’t produce the  “high” sensation associated with THC, even after consuming high doses. The therapeutic potential of CBD includes managing pain, anxiety, and reducing seizures caused by several types of epilepsy.

Common CBD consumption methods include:

  • Tinctures and CBD oils: By applying a few drops of the product under the tongue, CBD-infused tinctures and oils offer fast-acting effects
  • Vaping: CBD vape pens offer an immediate onset of effects after inhaling the vapor
  • Edibles: CBD-infused gummies, chocolates, baked goods, and beverages are a popular choice for precise dosing and a long duration of effects
  • Topicals: CBD-infused lotions, gels, and patches are applied directly onto the skin, offering potential therapeutic benefits that last for several hours

THC

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the psychotropic compound found in cannabis plants. Many people consume products infused with THC to treat a variety of conditions and potentially alleviate symptoms of nausea, chronic pain, and muscle spasms.

There are several ways to consume THC, including:

  • Smoking: Using a joint, pipe, or bong to smoke cannabis and experience the rapid effects of THC
  • Vaping: Using a THC vape pen or an appropriate vaporizer
  • Concentrates: Cannabis extracts and concentrates contain high levels of THC and are consumed by using a dab rig or by topping flower for added potency and flavor
  • Edibles: Consuming THC-infused gummies, beverages, baked goods, and chocolates
  • Topicals: THC-infused topicals are applied to a localized area, and the THC is absorbed through the skin, providing prolonged effects

CBD vs. THC: Effects and benefits

The effects of CBD and THC are different, but their potential health benefits often overlap. The main difference is that THC is a psychotropic cannabinoid, and CBD is not, yet both can be used medically and share possible therapeutic benefits such as pain reduction and anti-nausea.

CBD vs. THC: Legal status

The laws for cannabis use vary from state to state. CBD products are legal under federal law only if they are derived from the hemp plant, as hemp-derived CBD products contain less than 0.3% THC.

A medical cannabis license or card is needed to consume THC products in some states, while in others, it’s legal to consume it recreationally if bought from a legal dispensary. The legality of cannabis can vary, as each state has its own laws regarding THC.

How to choose CBD and THC products

Choosing the right cannabis product is not an easy feat. There are a few factors to consider before making that decision.

Purpose of consumption

Both THC and CBD offer different effects and medical benefits, so start by assessing your needs and choosing the product based on them.

Personal tolerance

Consuming a proper dose is key to having a pleasant experience. Start with low doses if you are a beginner. A balanced approach is also the way to go, as a lot of products offer a 1:1 CBD to THC ratio. This may provide optimal results without being overwhelming.

Methods of consumption

Some cannabis products might offer the same benefit, but the onset of effects and their duration may vary drastically. Consider all the available products and their methods of consumption and pick the most suitable option for you.

CBD and THC have a lot of similarities and differences, offering potential therapeutic effects both for recreational and medical use. Picking a THC-dominant or a CBD-dominant product provides the best results when you base the choice on your needs.
