Instructions

  1. Plug in your crockpot and set it to low heat
  2. Cut 1/2 cup of butter into small chunks and add to the warming crockpot
  3. As the butter melts, grind 7 to 10 grams of flower using a hand grinder
  4. Wait for the melted butter to reach around 160 degrees F (do not let it exceed 215 degrees F)
  5. Once the butter reaches 160 degrees, add in your ground flower and mix
  6. Let the mixture sit on low heat for about 3 hours, checking every 30-40 minutes to make sure the temperature does not exceed 215 degrees
  7. After 3 hours, turn off the crockpot and transfer the melted butter mixture into a smaller container
  8. Grab an airtight jar and place the tea infuser (or strainer lined with cheesecloth) over the opening
  9. Pour the melted butter mixture over the infuser/strainer and let the butter strain through for a few minutes
  10. Cover the jar with the lid and place in the fridge for 1+ hours to harden before using
  11. Use your cannabutter as a butter substitute in your favorite recipes, or just spread on a piece of toast to enjoy!

Dosing Guide

The potency of your cannabutter depends on how much flower you used, its THC content, the temperature of the melted butter, how long the butter was heated for, and even the flower species (indica or sativa). For this reason, it’s difficult to calculate the exact amount of THC in homemade cannabutter (and many other homemade edibles). We recommend spreading 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of your cannabutter on toast or a cracker and eating it. Wait up to 2 hours to see how the small amount effects you and base your dosing off this test.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use a hand grinder or your fingers to grind your flower. Using a food processor or similar will make the flower too fine and it will likely pass through the strainer and impact the flavor of your final cannabutter
  • Make sure your melted butter stays between 160 and 215 degrees F while in the crockpot to best preserve the strains’ cannabinoids and terpenes (if it gets too hot, most of them will burn off)
  • If the butter is getting too hot, uncover the crockpot or turn it off for a short period of time (but do not let the butter get below 160 degrees to ensure proper decarboxylation)
  • Let the butter heat for at least 2.5 hours to ensure the flower is properly decarboxylated (in other words, to activate the THC)
  • When straining the melted butter, do not push down on the plant material to make is strain faster – this will push plant material through the strainer and impact the flavor of your final cannabutter
